Hugh Gordon Porteus, literary and art critic, died 23 January, aged 87. Leeds-born, Porteus wrote spirited reviews for TS Eliot's Criterion and numerous other journals in the Thirties and, after war service, appeared in the Observer, Listener and many literary magazines. Published books on Wyndham Lewis (1932) and Chinese art (1935) and was a flamboyant figure in London's Bohemia.
