Jean Mayer, nutritionist, died Boston 1 January, aged 72. Directed pioneering research into problems of poverty, malnutrition, ageing and obesity. Published over 750 scientific papers and 10 books.
Chancellor of Tufts University, Boston (1992); President (1976- 92). An adviser to Presidents Nixon, Ford and Carter, he helped establish and expand federal food- stamp and school-lunch programmes.
