John Morris, gynaecologist and researcher, died Woodbridge, Connecticut 8 April, aged 78. Discovered with Dr Gertrude Van Wagenen the 'morning after' birth-control pill, which causes the body to eject a fertilised egg by preventing its implantation and growth in the womb. Also designed new versions of the intra-uterine contraceptive device, became a leader in population control efforts and was a medical adviser to the World Health Organisation.
