John Pennel, of the United States, setting a pole-vault world record of 16ft 101 4 in (5.14 metres) at White City, London, in 1963. Pennel, who broke the pole-vault record eight times in the 1960s and was the first man to clear 17ft (5.18m), died in Santa Monica on 26 September, aged 53.
