Jose B. Fernandez, banker, died 19 June, aged 70. Appointed governor of the Philippine Central Bank in 1983, under President Ferdinand Marcos, at the height of a financial crisis following the assassination of Senator Benigno Aquino. His predecessor had been accused by the International Monetary Fund of padding the nation's reserves. Credited with restoring international trust in the Philippine banking system. Retained in the post after Marcos was ousted in the 1986 popular uprising and succeeded as President by Aquino's widow, Corazon.
