MAY I, as a great friend and admirer of Solly Zuckerman, be allowed to add a few words to the obituary notices? writes Lord Gladwyn.

Though - as has been duly noted - he was never in favour of unilateral nuclear disarmament, his instinctive horror of nuclear weapons led him at least to favour their non-use in war and (in recent years) to give powerful support to a comprehensive nuclear test ban. But, above all perhaps, his condemnation from the moment of its initiation some 11 years ago of President Reagan's 'Star Wars' scheme as a dangerous and absurd waste of money, should also be regarded as a tribute to his common sense and essential foresight.
