Marlon Riggs, film-maker and teacher, died Oakland, California 4 April, aged 37. His best-known documentaries were Ethnic Notions and Color Adjustment, tracing media portrayal of blacks through US history. Conservatives in the US held up his Tongues Untied (1992), about black homosexuals, as a type of art that the government should not fund.
