Professor Alan Thornton, educationalist, died 16 September, aged 80. Author (with FJ Bayliss) of Adult Education and the Industrial Community (1965), considered a classic in its field. Retired as Professor of Adult Education at Nottingham University in 1977. Worked as an arbitrator in industrial disputes at ACAS 1974-84.
