Richard Berczeller, doctor and political activist, died 3 January, aged 91. Joined the Austrian Socialist movement in the Twenties, and remained a member after it was declared illegal in 1934. Repeatedly detained as a political prisoner. In 1938 he was arrested by the Gestapo but released on condition he leave Germany. Worked in New York as a doctor for poor immigrants, and later as a school doctor. On the staff of the Beth Israel Hospital, New York, for 45 years.
