YOUR obituary of Sir Jack Longland (by Michael Westmacott, 4 December) refers to his having been 'in Greenland with Gino Watkins in 1935', writes Dr G. Hattersley- Smith.
Watkins was drowned in Tugtulik (Lake Fjord), East Greenland, in August 1932. The 1935-36 expedition, of which Longland was a member in the first summer, went to the same region under the leadership of August Courtauld and Lawrence Wager. In August 1935, Longland and Wager led two three- man parties on the first ascent of Gunnbjorns Feld (12,139ft), the highest mountain in the Arctic.
