DEVOTEES of Manx motorcycle racing will appreciate the obituary of Stanley Woods (by Jim Reynolds, 31 July), writes A. B. Sainsbury.
Some will recall Woods's idiosyncratically painted orange crash helmet, demonstrating his political attachments in his native Ireland, which caused uncertainty about his attitude to 'God Save the King' when played in the Governor's presence, and others that characteristically daring approach to Ballaugh Bridge, which he attacked with his left elbow against a padded telegraph pole before taking to the air for a controlled jump from the crown of the arch. He was the most artistic rider.
