New poll shows 70 per cent of UK respondents think he should resign

Only two per cent of the UK want Sepp Blatter not to resign, according to a new poll.

A survey of 1,535 people by YouGov showed that 70 per cent thought he should resign as president of Fifa, a view which was held by a majority across all political parties followers.

63 per cent of the sample surveyed also said they were ‘not interested’ in football.

Fifa president Sepp Blatter will stand for re-election in a vote today as an FBI investigation into long-standing corruption continues.

Mr Blatter has also blamed the recent corruption arrests on the results of the 2018 and 2022 World Cup hosts.

"If two other countries had emerged from the envelope I think we would not have had these problems,” he said in an address today.

"We can't let the reputation of Fifa be dragged through the mud. We have reached a turning point."

"These are individuals, they are not the entire organisation."

"We need to pull together and move forward. We cannot supervise everyone in football - that's more than 300 million people."
