Susanna Reid dismisses criticism for flirting with men including David Cameron and David Beckham in interviews
The broadcaster has insisted she's always professional
She clapped her hands to her cheeks when she chatted to David Beckham, and chewed on her pen while grilling Prime Minister David Cameron, but Good Morning Britain presenter Susanna Reid has maintained that it's all part of the job.
"I have heard so many things about my interviews over the years that I just take it on the chin and roll with it. I conduct all my interviews professionally," she told the Evening Standard.
"What's important is that our viewers enjoy them. How other people interpret it is up to them."
Reid has previously explained that part of interviewing people is putting them at ease, and that being friendly helps them relax.
"Any interviewer's mission is to get the best from a guest," she told The Mirror. "I enjoy the interviews I do and it would be bizarre, wouldn't it, if I didn't laugh at a guest's joke, or didn't smile?"
Saying she never wanted to be "rude" or "stonewalling" to her guests, Reid said that the way her interviews were reported was unfair.
"With David Cameron, firstly I do not suck my pen because that would be weird. I’d end up with ink all around my mouth. I chew my pen."
"And that’s just what I do when I’m thinking. I do it with all my interviews, including those with women. I’m not accused of flirting with them, am I?"
In 2013, Reid was criticised for a flirtatious interview with the Arctic Monkeys' Alex Turner. When she asked if he would consider doing Strictly Come Dancing, he replied: "Of course... I should have been the one that said you look good on the dance floor."
