The music industry has marvelled at Adele’s phenomenal success as her album sales continue to soar.

This surprise reflects the tough climate the industry continues to endure, not because of her age or the fact that she is a mother.

The New York Times has come under fire for describing the singer as a “27-year-old mother who barely uses social media” who is selling more albums “than anyone thought possible” in a tweet on Friday.

The newspaper, arguably the most famous and esteemed in America, was accused of being “lazy” and “sexist” for sharing an article about the star alongside a caption highlighting her status as a mother.

“Wtf does motherhood have to do with it?” asked one user. “When has a man ever been described like this?” echoed another.

The piece itself described Adele as “a 27-year-old mother who speaks with a working-class North London accent” and explored the commercial success of her three albums.
