TJ Miller was arrested in the early hours of Friday morning for allegedly assaulting a cab driver over a political argument about Donald Trump.

The comedian, who is best known for his roles in Silicon Valley and Office Christmas Party, was arrested at 1am for battery on a taxi driver, according to police.

Los Angeles Police Department officer, Jenny Houser, told The Hollywood Reporter Miller allegedly assaulted the driver over a row involving the President-elect.

The official said the dispute was recorded as a private person's arrest, otherwise known as a citizen’s arrest and Miller was taken into custody by a LAPD officer and released without having to post bail. LAPD were not able to confirm which cab company the driver had been working for.

The incident did not stop Miller hosting the Critics Choice Awards on Sunday night. While on stage, he joked about the “elephant in the room” but did not actually refer to what had happened.

“It’s been in the news all weekend, and it’s really affected me - the election was definitely hacked by the Russians,” he said. “So luckily, we’re doing an awards show here in an airplane hangar in Santa Monica, so we’re safe - what are they going to hack the teleprompter?”

He pretended to discuss the scandal again later, saying: “Okay, let’s talk about the real elephant in the room. Everyone’s been asking me about it all weekend, people were asking me about it on the blue carpet, and yes … it is the 31st anniversary of A Chorus Line on Broadway”.

Just before the ceremony, Miller quipped about it on Twitter, saying: “Tonight I will address the elephant in the room at @CriticsChoice on A&E. Tune in and find out.”

Miller is a vocal critic of Mr Trump and at the ceremony he took aim at trolls, including the “one we elected for President”. In November, he burned a Trump-brand tie on a late-night talk show, joking: “That’s how shitty Donald Trump’s ties are - they’re not even flammable.”

A representative for Miller did not immediately respond to request for comment.
