LEADING Conservative Europhobes last night embraced John Major, as he faced a storm of criticism from the Liberal Democrats, Labour and some Tory MPs for supporting a multi-speed Europe, writes Colin Brown.
Labour said Mr Major had put Britain in the 'bicycle lane' of Europe. Pro-Maastricht Tory MPs accused Mr Major of engaging in 'propaganda and fantasy'.
Mr Major, however, was strongly supported by Europhobes, who claimed they were winning the argument on the future of Europe. Lord Tebbit said it was a 'turning point'.
