Three policemen were doused in petrol and burned to death after a domestic dispute in Paris. Their attacker, an Egyptian-born man, also died in the flames.

The three policemen had rescued the man's wife and teenage son, whom he had threatened with the same fate. As they turned to leave, he threw petrol over them, and himself, and set the apartment alight.

The interior minister, Jean-Pierre Chevenement, said the "horrific incident" was the work of a "crazed person".
