The Foreign Secretary, Robin Cook, and his estranged wife have come to an "amicable settlement" over the terms of their divorce and proceedings will start soon, it emerged last night. In a joint statement, Mr Cook and his wife, Margaret, said: "We have been discussing our divorce for some time and have reached an amicable settlement. Divorce proceedings will start soon in order that we are both free to get on with our lives."
Mrs Cook will file the petition, but it is not known whether she will cite adultery on the part of her husband with his secretary, Gaynor Regan, as the grounds for the divorce.
