The Royal National Theatre is to get more than pounds 31m in Lottery money to modernise its concrete building on London's South Bank. It is the third largest Lottery grant made by the Arts Council. RNT director Richard Eyre said: "This grant makes it possible for the National Theatre to survive well into the next century." The RNT must raise pounds 10m in matching funds to free the whole sum, but already has enough to release pounds 9m for the first phase, due to start in January.
