The cost of security against protesters during clearance work at the Newbury bypass site in Berkshire will be pounds 6m, the Highways Agency chief executive Lawrie Haynes disclosed. He said that when the clearance contract was awarded it was worth pounds 1.684m. Most of the work is done but the contract is still in force and the final cost has yet to be determined.
