pounds 82,000 Constables
Two views of London by John Constable, which have never been on public view, fetched a total of pounds 82,000 at auction - nearly three and a half times their upper estimate. The two pencil drawings - one of a windmill at Barnes in 1818, the other of the Thames waterfront and the "new" Waterloo Bridge in 1817 - remained in the family until the sale at Phillips in London. Both were bought by an anonymous collector.
