At least 311 young people were taken to hospitals in Japan yesterday after watching a popular cartoon on television. Viewers complained of feeling ill, eye irritation and loss of vision after seeing one of the cartoon characters flash its eyes.

The hospitalised viewers, ranging in age from 3 to 20, had been watching Pokemon, (Pocket Monsters), based on characters in a video game produced by Nintendo Co.
