A FORMER public schoolboy who spent his life working on the railways left pounds 5m to charities in his will, it emerged yesterday.
Charles Shorto, who died in October at the age of 91, lived quietly in the village of East Budleigh, Devon.
He went to Rugby school, where his father was a housemaster, but left to join the railways when he was 16. He worked as an engineer for more than 40 years.
One of the charities which will benefit from a donation of pounds 500,000 is the National Railway Museum.
