LA NINA, the weather phenomenon behind record snow in the North- west of the United States this winter and dry conditions in Florida, is being blamed for the tornadoes that have swept the Mid West plains.
It is the opposite of the more common and better-understood El Nino, which is warming of the Pacific area. La Nina refers to a unusually cold pool of water in the equatorial Pacific that develops every few years.
