MEXICO URGED caution along the Gulf coast yesterday as tropical storm Bret intensified, but the ports were kept open.

The Transport Ministry issued a hurricane watch and storm warning from La Pesca southward to Veracruz, shifting northward in line with Bret's predicted path. The US National Hurricane Centre cautioned residents in the western Gulf of Mexico to monitor the progress of the tropical storm, the second of 1999.
