HURRICANE FLOYD has brought misery for thousands of Americans in North Carolina but one of its most distressing side-effects has been the flooding of cemeteries, uprooting dozens of coffins.

The problem has become so bad in some areas that teams have been set up in boats to round up the errant caskets.

"Imagine trying to hold a balloon underwater," Joseph Sawyer, a Goldsboro official, said yes- terday. "It's the same concept."
