THE HONDURAN government has sent airforce planes to rescue residents from remote Caribbean islands yesterday as the most powerful hurricane in a decade threatened Central America.

Last night the Foreign Office was advising Britons in the region to monitor local weather reports and avoid Hurricane Mitch, a Category 5 hurricane - the strongest hurricane category - with winds of 180mph.
