EXTREME WINTER conditions in Florida have hampered efforts by researchers to compile a list of the endangered manatees in the region. The first manatee census this year has logged only 1,873 "sea-cows", a drop of 150 on last year.

Marine biologists are hoping that the weather is masking the census rather than an increase in the numbers killed by boats. Last year was the third worst on record for manatee deaths.
