AN UNDERSEA earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.1 on the Richter scale has struck Taiwan, shaking high-rise buildings but failing to inflict any serious damage.
The earthquake's epicentre was said to be beneath the Pacific, 78 miles off the island's eastern coast. It struck at 9.49pm (13.49 GMT) on Monday, and was the strongest tremor felt in Taiwan since July, when five died in a quake registering 6.2 on the Richter scale.
