HOLIDAYMAKERS heading for Greece this weekend can expect a heatwave topping 40C (104F). Greek hospitals and emergency services are on alert for the second time this month. The government has launched an emergency civil defence plan and doctors will staff special phone lines to answer heat-related inquiries.

Firefighters around the country are also on standby to deal with any brush or forest fires sparked by the heat.
