A COLUMN of ash six miles high began to rain on Quito, the capital of Ecuador, yesterday after an eruption of the nearby Pichincha volcano.
Pichincha erupted on Wednesday with three massive explosions, each lasting around 10 minutes, sending a plume of ash up into the atmosphere. In an attempt to avoid inhaling the acrid ash, many Quito residents have taken to wearing surgical masks and handkerchiefs.
