EARTH WAS turned into a giant "snowball" by an ice-age Armageddon that almost snuffed out life on the planet 700 million years ago, scientists said yesterday.

Ironically it was probably global warming, one of the 20th century's biggest environmental threats of the 20th century, that saved us.Evidence for the hypothesis has emerged from analysis of carbonate rocks in Namibia.
