STORMS BLACKED out more than 30,000 households in the west of Ireland yesterday as the tail-end of Hurricane Mitch hit the Irish Republic. Power lines were brought down and fallen trees blocked roads in the west.
Fierce gales left 800 people on the Scottish island of Islay without water after a 40ft stretch of embankment along the west coast was swept away, damaging water pipes.
