AN EARTHQUAKE hit eastern Taiwan yesterday, but the country escaped serious damage from the quake, which measured 5.2 on the Richter scale.
The earthquake, whose epicentre was 59km (37 miles) north-east of the eastern county of Hualien, occurred under the sea bed and was felt in most parts of east and north-eastern Taiwan, but not in the capital city, Taipei, officials said.
