A RIFT in Italy's Communist Refoundation widened yesterday, offering the embattled Prime Minister, Romano Prodi, a ray of hope as he prepares for a confidence vote on Friday. Mr Prodi lost his lower house majority when the Communists' political committee voted on Sunday to reject the 1999 draft budget.
