Saudi appoints religious leader

SAUDI ARABIA has appointed Sheikh Abdel-Aziz bin Abdullah al-Sheikh as grand mufti, the kingdom's senior religious leader. The appointment followed the death on Thursday of Sheikh Abdul-Aziz bin Baz, 89, who had held the post for about 30 years. The new grand mufti will also head the country's top council of religious scholars.
