A study of the magnetic fields of Europa, which is similar in size to the Earth's moon, shows that an ocean of liquid water is circulating under a thick layer of ice.

Planetary researchers have speculated for many years about the presence of an ocean on Europa, based largely on theorectical studies, but the latest findings have provided the most convincing support to date.

The research, by the University of California, examined data from a magnet-field monitor on board from the Galileo spacecraft when it passed close to Europa in January.
