Mexico was going crazy with talk of the "end of the world" and alien invaders on Thursday after a weather phenomenon saw the Sun appear as if it had developed a halo around it.

People in Mexico turned out in their tens of thousands to look up at the optical illusion that created a perfect circle of light around the Sun.

According to scientists, the crystals cause the light to be refracted and reflected, leading to the rainbow coloured circle appearing around the sun.

Experts did say though that the halo that appeared in Mexico on Thursday was a particularly good example of the weather event as it could be seen from three different cities.
