Season opens in goals spree

After spending a mountain of money, Premiership football clubs were rewarded with goals galore yesterday as the season opened.

t Fabrizio Ravanelli started to pay back the pounds 7m that it cost Middlesbrough to buy him by scoring a hat-trick in a 3-3 draw against Liverpool.

t Manchester United, double winners last season, won 3-0 at Wimbledon.

t Newcastle United were given an early reminder that success cannot be bought when their world record purchase, pounds 15m Alan Shearer, drew a blank and they lost 2-0 at Everton.
