Two transport companies will be sentenced today after five people were killed when the arm of a digger on board a low-loader swung out and smashed into approaching cars.

Bazeley Plant Hire, of St Columb, Cornwall, and Chepstow Plant Hire, employed the driver of the low-loader, 31-year-old Mark Wade, of Fraddon, Cornwall. He was found guilty of causing the deaths in the crash in December 1995.

The transport firms were found guilty at Truro Crown Court yesterday of failing to ensure the vehicle was not a risk to safety, under the Health and Safety at Work Act.
