Six teenagers were believed to have died in a car crash in south-east London last night. The accident happened at 11.10pm, when an Austin Metro hit a lamppost and a tree at a junction in Eltham Park.
Four people were confirmed dead by firefighters at the scene. Two other people were cut from the burning wreckage of the car. But they are believed to have since died.
A spokeswoman for Scotland Yard said that the car had caught fire on impact.
London Fire Brigade said the accident occurred at the junction of West Mount Road and Eltham Park Gardens. Up to 20 firefighters were at the scene, trying to quell the fire and cut the victims from the wreckage. All roads in the surrounding area were closed off last night. The names of the victims were withheld until police could contact relatives.
