Smiles and tears:
John Major (above, right) enjoying a joke yesterday before being interviewed by David Frost on Breakfast with Frost. Asked about his plans for the new year, the Prime Minister replied: "To remain cool, calm and elected."
The Conservatives will unveil a pounds 7m anti-Labour poster campaign today as a follow-up to their controversial "New Labour, New Danger" series. Under the slogan "It would all end in tears", the latest campaign features pictures (right) of "ordinary" people apparently adversely affected by Labour's tax and economic policies. Instead of the demonic red eyes that characterised the last campaign, it will show a red teardrop seeping from the eyes of the "victims".
Mr Major and Brian Mawhinney, the party chairman, denied the posters amounted to negative campaigning.Photograph: Emma Boam
