Spanish socialist leader quits

THE SPANISH Socialist leader Josep Borrell resigned yesterday, throwing the opposition party into deep crisis. Mr Borrell, prime ministerial candidate for 15 months, said he left to prevent a financial scandal surrounding former close colleagues from damaging the party.
