Student hanged himself over debt

A student who hanged himself after receiving a bank demand for repayment of pounds 778 that he owed said he would "rather die" than face the debt collectors, his mother told an inquest yesterday.

Malcolm Jones, 22, a second-year biology student at Manchester Metropolitan University, had despaired after learning of a bank letter threatening him with debt collectors, his mother Dorothy told the hearing in Warrington. "It was the last straw," said Mrs Jones, 58. A verdict of suicide was recorded.
