Malala shooting: 10 militants jailed

Ten Pakistani Taliban militants who helped plan the attack on Malala Yousafzai in 2012, on her way home from school in Swat, north-west of Islamabad, were jailed for 25 years each yesterday. Malala was seriously wounded and airlifted for treatment to Britain, where she now lives.

Calbuco volcano erupts again

The Calbuco volcano in southern Chile erupted again last night, releasing a large column of ash into the air just over a week after it spectacularly roared to life following half a century of inactivity. “As predicted, the third eruptive pulse has arrived. Red alert,” the National Geology and Mining Service said.

Best newspaper prize goes to, er, i

i has been named National Newspaper of the Year at the 2015 News Awards. The judges said: “The winner has clearly identified its market and been unswerving in catering to it. The achievement of launching a quality national in a declining market is remarkable. The concept of a concise, quality briefing at a great value price is obviously what a lot of readers want. Add to that great design and great photography and it’s got to be a winner.”

500 jobs to go at used car dealership

The second-hand car company Carcraft is to close, with the loss of 500 jobs. Administrators from Grant Thornton said trading has ceased at

the dealership, based in Rochdale, Greater Manchester, which operated 10 forecourts across the UK. The group is said to be making annual losses of about £8m a year.

Trapped teenager rescued five days on

Rescuers pulled a teenager alive from the earthquake rubble he had been trapped in for five days yesterday. One of the police officers who helped rescue Pemba Tamang, 15, said he was surprisingly responsive. “He thanked me when I first approached him,” he said. A woman was rescued hours later.

Parents warned for refusing mosque trip

The governors of a Cornwall school have warned parents wishing to withdraw their children from a trip to a mosque, because of fears that they would witness “guns and violence”, that any absences will not be approved. Lostwithiel School has urged suspicious parents to encourage their children to go on the trip for the sake of community relations.

Police quiz ex-Army chief in sex inquiry

Lord Bramall, the UK’s former highest-ranking soldier, has been interviewed under caution by police officers investigating claims of historic child abuse. The 91-year-old, who denies the allegations, met officers from Operation Midland at a police station in Farnham, Surrey, yesterday. The former Chief of the Defence Staff retired from the Lords in 2013 but retains his peerage.

Clashes at North Korean meeting

A meeting on North Korea’s human rights record briefly turned into chaos at the UN in New York as North Korean diplomats insisted on reading a statement, amid shouts from defectors, and then stormed out. The US ambassador to the UN, Samantha Power, tried to quiet the North Korean diplomats at the event that featured more than 20 defectors. Defectors stood up and shouted in Korean amid calls for calm as a UN security team assembled.

The great view that could turn dim

The night-time view from the top of the Empire State Building, looking toward the lights of the financial district, is among the greatest sights in New York. But that sight could soon be diminished as city leaders are trying to reduce New York’s environmental impact by forcing skyscraper lights off when empty.

‘I just lost it’ – mother of Baltimore teen

The mother who was filmed furiously dragging her son from a protest over the death of Freddie Gray in Baltimore has given her first interview. Mother-of-six Toya Graham said she spotted her 16-year-old son among a crowd throwing objects at police. “At that point, I just lost it,” she told CBS News. i100.co uk
