Wales to host next Nato summit

Next year’s Nato summit will be held in Wales, David Cameron has announced. It will be the first time that the biennial gathering of alliance leaders has been held in the UK since the end of the Cold War in 1990. The event will be staged at the luxury Celtic Manor resort, near Newport, in south Wales.

Teenager held over pizza driver killing

A 17-year-old was arrested last night in connection with the killing of pizza delivery driver Thavisha Lakindu Peiris, 25, who was stabbed on Sunday in Sheffield after making his last delivery before starting a new job. The victim’s family described him as a “caring and loving son”.

Chemical weapons facilities destroyed

Syria has destroyed all of its declared chemical weapons production and mixing facilities, meeting a major deadline in an ambitious disarmament programme, a chemical weapons watchdog said yesterday. This is part of a deal brokered by Russia and the US. MORE

A heart surgeon has won an award for a training device he invented in his garage. Abdullrazak Hossien’s replica of an aortic root, made from a sweet tin, is set to be manufactured by the award sponsor Ethicon.

First filmed hearing is broadcast

The first-ever televised court hearing was aired yesterday. Broadcasters showed a Court of Appeal hearing against a man accused of counterfeiting coins, represented by David Cameron’s brother, Alexander Cameron QC. Cameras were banned in 1925. MORE

Le Pen in row over hostages’ beards

The far-right leader Marine Le Pen caused a storm by implying that four French hostages freed after three years in Niger may have been radicalised by Islamists. She said she was “uneasy” about their “astonishing beards” when they returned to Paris.

Smoke but no fire (yet) for crack mayor

Police have obtained a video that matches one that has been alleged to show Toronto Mayor Rob Ford smoking crack cocaine, but they won’t confirm what the video shows, or say if they are contemplating charges against Mr Ford. MORE

Cider house blues as storm wrecks trees

The country’s oldest cider farm may have to cease production due to damage caused by the St Jude’s Day storm. Nash’s Cider Farm in West Pennard, Somerset, which has been making the beverage for 82 years, lost 14 trees in Sunday’s storm. The farm produces 7,000 litres of cider a year.

Old in the tooth but a whale of a price

A 130-year-old whale tusk has been sold for £36,000 at an auction in London. The 2.51 metre-long tooth originally belonged to the sailor Cornelius Fudge, whose name is thought to be the inspiration behind the Harry Potter character. Fudge was presented with the tusk when he retired from service in 1881.

Marvin Gaye’s family sue R&B duo

The family of late soul singer Marvin Gaye have sued R&B recording artists Robin Thicke and Pharrell Williams for copyright infringement, accusing them of stealing from the Motown legend’s “Got to Give it Up” for his hit single “Blurred Lines”. MORE

The two spookiest cities in the UK are both in Scotland according to a new study. There have been 375 paranormal sightings in Edinburgh in the past 25 years and 350 in Glasgow, according to the Paranormal Witness Report. Nottingham came third.

France’s presidential chef is retiring after four decades of culinary service, having fed five French presidents and peppered the steaks tartare of some of the world’s most powerful leaders. Bernard Vaussion, 60, right, who will be succeeded by Guillaume Gomez, left, cooked his last lunch – for President François Hollande – yesterday.
