Anti-Japanese street protests

Police used pepper spray and tear gas to break up an anti-Japan protest in southern China yesterday as demonstrators took to the streets in scores of cities. The protests followed Japan's decision last week to buy the disputed islands which Tokyo calls the Senkaku and Beijing calls the Diaoyu and which could contain valuable gas reserves. MORE

Slurry victims were trying to save pet

Two senior health and safety executives were yesterday probing the deaths of 22-year-old Ulster rugby player Nevin Spence, his brother Graham, 30, and father Noel, 52, at the family home near Hillsborough in County Down, Northern Ireland on Saturday evening. It is thought all three men died after an attempt to save a pet dog from a slurry tank. MORE
