Memorial unveiled to Fusilier Lee Rigby

A memorial to murdered soldier Lee Rigby has been unveiled in his home town. Friends and family – including his four-year-old son, Jack – gathered for a service at Middleton Memorial Gardens in Greater Manchester. Fusilier Rigby was killed in London in May 2013 by two Islamist extremists.

Dando colleague’s death threats claim

A TV presenter who worked alongside Jill Dando has said she received similar death threats to the Crimewatch star just weeks before the execution-style murder. Alice Beer said she was targeted with rape and death threats “in the same handwriting” as those addressed to Ms Dando.

Deal closer on nuclear programme

A deal on Iran’s controversial nuclear programme between Tehran and the five permanent members of the UN Security Council and Germany appears to be in reach. Enoch Powell is being investigated as a suspected member of a claimed Westminster paedophile network – the latest senior parliamentarian to be the subject of police inquiries into alleged establishment sex rings. The Met has several ongoing inquiries into suspected abusers.

Funding for refugees ‘will run out in days’

Funding to help Palestinian refugees affected by the war in Syria will run out “in a matter of days” unless the United Nations receives more money. A spokesman for the UN’s Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees said the extra cash was “quite literally a matter of life and death”.

Fraud Office fined for documents errors

The Serious Fraud Office has been fined £180,000 by the Information Commissioner’s Office after confidential documents from an investigation into BAE Systems were sent to the wrong person. They included bank statements showing payments made by the defence giant to various individuals.

Hollywood ‘bribed’ to become a baker

The Great British Bake Off judge Paul Hollywood has revealed how he had to be bribed by his father to quit his studies and become a baker. Hollywood, who stars with Mary Berry on the hit BBC show, told Kirsty Young on Radio 4’s Desert Island Discs that he had wanted to be an artist, but his father offered him £500 to “join the industry”.
