University to scrap zero-hours contracts

Edinburgh University has promised to put an end to zero-hours contracts after it was named the most prolific user of the controversial practice among higher education institutions. Currently there are 2,712 staff at the university on zero-hours contracts, but that's set to change. MORE

Malala Yousafzai, the Pakistani girl who survived a Taliban assassination attempt, has won the Children's Peace Prize for promoting education for girls in her homeland. Now living in Birmingham, she accepted the prize "on behalf of all the children all over the world trying to go to school".

Two held after boy in pram is shot dead

Two men were arrested yesterday after a boy being pushed in his pram was shot dead in New York. One-year-old Antiq Hennis received multiple gunshot wounds on Sunday. Police said they believed the child's father was the target and the gunfire may have been gang-related.

Hitler's bodyguard dies at age of 96

Rochus Misch, a former bodyguard to Adolf Hitler, has died at the age of 96. A witness to the Nazi dictator's final hours in his bunker, Misch published his own memoirs about his past entitled The Last Witness, although some critics suggested it exaggerated his importance.

Maker apologises for condom slogan

A condom company has apologised after producing packets marked "for foreigners and certain Germans" for a far-right party's campaign against immigrant births. The condoms were ordered by the National Democratic Party.

Batwoman writers quit in lesbian row

The writers behind the Batwoman comic books have resigned after DC Comics allegedly told them to alter their storylines, including the superhero's lesbian wedding. J H Williams and W Haden Blackmore said they were "frustrated and angry".
