Shooting spree in southern California

A shooting in southern California has left four people dead, including the gunman. Orange County police found a female shot multiple times in a house. Three people were shot dead in the subsequent 25 minutes. Several others were injured. Police have not yet uncovered a motive for the shootings.

PM quits after new government failure

Prime Minister Hamadi Jebali has resigned after his attempts to end a political stand-off by forming a new government failed. "I vowed that if my initiative did not succeed, I would resign," he said

Patient dies of coronavirus

A patient diagnosed with the Sars-like coronavirus died in a hospital in Birmingham yesterday. The man was one of three members of the same family who have caught the virus, apparently by human to human contact, although experts have said the disease lacks ability to spread easily. MORE

No twins on IVF for women under 37

Women under 37 will be prevented from trying for twins on their first IVF attempt, due to the health risks associated with multiple births. The recommendations are part of updated IVF guidelines which also call for the upper age limit to be extended. MORE

Mentally ill death rate is 'frightening'

The death rate among mentally ill people who received NHS treatment last year is four times higher than that of the general population, with campaigners calling the difference "frightening". The mentally ill are dying prematurely because their physical health is neglected. MORE

Second French soldier dies

A French soldier has been killed in a clash with extremists in northern Mali, the second French soldier to die since the start of France's military intervention on 11 January. President François Hollande said: "We are now in the last phase of the operation" to root out extremists.

BBC executive accused of bullying

A BBC executive is being investigated in a wider bullying culture inquiry at the corporation, with more than 20 complaints against him. The BBC has brought in an outside consultancy to deal with bullying and sexual assault allegations in the wake of the Jimmy Savile scandal. MORE

Pryce jury continue deliberations

The jury in the trial of Vicky Pryce, the ex-wife of former minister Chris Huhne, will resume its deliberations today after sending the judge 10 questions. Mr Justice Sweeney sent the jury home for the night saying some of the questions raised "fundamental issues" that required answers. Ms Pryce denies perverting the course of justice by taking her husband's speeding penalty points.

House of Commons pulls beef products

The House of Commons has withdrawn four beef products from its restaurants while tests are carried out for horse DNA. A spokesman said the "meat derivative" items had been removed from shelves as a "precaution". It is the first time the scandal has affected the subsidised eateries inside parliament.

Baroque collection is free to the nation

An Italian Baroque art collection worth an estimated £100m has been given to museums and galleries across Britain – on the condition that the public is never charged to view them. Sir Denis Mahon, heir to the Guinness Mahon banking fortune, is a campaigner for free entry to public museums. MORE

Apple admits its network was hacked

Apple has become the latest big company to admit it has been a victim of computer hacking. The US-based technology firm said it was working with authorities to investigate the incident. It said in a statement: "We identified a small number of systems within Apple that were infected and isolated them from our network."

Boar hunters come up short in mass cull

Efforts to cull a sprawling wild boar population fell flat when a party of 200 hunters managed to kill only one animal. The hunt was organised in a forest near the town of Postel, where several road accidents have been linked to boar. Hunters spotted about 60 animals but apart from the one killed, all the others slipped away.

Brangelina set to launch own wine

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt are to launch their own rosé wine next month, named after their Chateau Miraval estate in the south of France.

The Hollywood couple have teamed up with the French wine-makers Perrin to develop the label, which will be priced at around €15 (£13) a bottle. Jolie and Pitt acquired the 1,200-acre estate, which includes up to 60 acres of vines, in 2008.
